Long Term Storage of your CaravanIf your caravan is to be left unused for a
long period, about six months or longer, jack the wheels off the ground and
support the axle on blocks. If you are going to use the van within a few weeks,
simply steady. DO NOT use
the corner steadies to lift or to
keep the tyres off the ground.
Use a garage jack or hydraulic motorcar jack. You will cause damage or even
warping of the chassis if you use the corner steadies, let alone the damage you
will cause to these steadies. The water tanks should be drained and left empty. The filler cap should be left loose to allow entry of air. I find that by using a half a cupful of coarse salt with a little water, swirled and shaken vigorously, will get rid of any algae when ready to fill up again. Clean and dust the interior regularly, and
leave the doors and windows open for a while to air out. Tallow or beeswax on
the drawer slides will ensure smooth operation. Preferably, store the caravan under cover to protect from sun, wind and rain to preserve the paintwork and materials.
