Repelling the BugsAs we all know, bugs are a huge problem with any outdoor activities. Mosquitoes and gnats can make a camping holiday uncomfortable, these insects are most active in the evening and early morning, so apply insect repellent at these times for best effect. There
is no one solution that works all the time, but here are a few tips to help keep
the bugs away. There is a general misconception that applying more insect repellent is more effective. Tests have shown that this is not the case - high concentrations feel unpleasantly oily and can cause a rash. Although safe on nylon, cotton, and wool, some repellents can damage rayon, acetate, and other synthetic fibers. High concentrations and applications are not recommended for use on children. Repellents are of course poisonous and can cause sickness if swallowed. Before use, apply to the inside of your wrist to test for sensitivity. After applying, always wash hands and keep them away from eyes and mouth. Never spray a repellent on the face - aim the spray at your hands and then rub gently over the face. A good repellent in stick form, works very well. I prefer these, as they are less bulky, apply easily, and can be used on the kids safely. Mosquitoes, flies and other pesky insects can be very annoying as they swarm and bite causing much itching and discomfort.
Aerosol repellents or repellents in stick (rub-on) form, work very well whilst sitting or moving around the campsite, but can be uncomfortable when one sleeps. Here I use a citronella candle, nice little small ones are easily available, and I burn it throughout the night in the van. I also keep a larger one, available in a decorative jar, and burn throughout the night in the tent or awning. This also serves as a night light.
