Course Description

The Adult CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) for Family and Friends Course targets all lay rescuers, such as family members of patients at risk for sudden cardiac death and other laypersons who want to learn rescue skills for loved ones.  The Course teaches rescuers skills in CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction.  It presents information about the adult Chain of Survival and signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke and choking in adults. The text includes information about healthy heart living and actions to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease in adults.  The course also presents information about the paediatric infant and child chain of Survival, signs of choking in infants and children, prevention of sudden infant death syndrome, and prevention of the most common fatal injuries in infants and children.

The course teaches 3 separate courses:

bullet

adult CPR (course length: about 2 hours)

bullet

infant and Childe CPR (course length: about 2¼ to 2½ hours)

bullet

and CPR for all ages (course length: about 4½ hours)

The course includes multiple learning activities: a videotaped overview of the Chain of Survival and other cognitive information, videotaped skills demonstration and practice, instructor-led practice scenarios, and a peer practice session.

Course Purpose

The Emergency Cardiovascular Care Programs of the American Heart Association developed the CPR for Family and Friends Course to promote widespread training in CPR at low cost. The course provide concise, user-friendly information to train participants in the skills of adult, infant, and child CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for the responsive victim.

Because we presume that participants will complete this course predominantly for the rescue of family members or friends, the course does not teach the use of barrier devices, which would be used for CPR in the workplace.  This course is certainly to be used to train laypersons to serve as rescuers in the community, but it is not designed for participants who are required to attend a CPR course for the workplace or for a credential.

A participant card is given in a CPR for Family and Friends Course, but it is not a credential.  If participants require a credential, they should complete the Heartsaver CPR or the Heartsaver AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) Course.

Course Objectives

The American Heart Association developed the CPR for Family and Friends Course curriculum to achieve one ultimate objective: to increase survival from sudden cardiac arrest by increasing the number of rescuers prepared to phone the emergency telephone number and provide early CPR.  By strengthening the early access and early CPR links in the chain of Survival in every community, the American Heart Association should meet its mission: to reduce disability and death caused by cardiovascular disease and stroke.  In addition, the course is designed to prevent disability and death and the need for CPR by learning the warning signs of heart attack and stroke in adults and methods te reduce death caused by sudden infant death syndrome in infants and injuries in children.

Course Content and Design

The course is brief - each module (adult or infant and child) can be completed in approximately 2 hours, and both modules can be completed in 4 to 4½ hours.  To keep the course brief, course content was carefully selected to focus on the essential information and skills practice time required by rescuers.  Information formerly covered in more detail in CPR courses that does not contribute to the acquisition of CPR skill (i.e. healthy heart living, detailed anatomy and physiology) is condensed, particularly if this same information is provided in other American Heart Association courses or recourses.

The content of the CPR for Family and Friends Course was designed to simplify and clarify essential information to help rescuers know when to act and what to do.  The course design emphasizes manikin and scenario practice time, so participants learn to perform CPR skills under conditions that simulate actual emergencies.
